What are stem cells?
Stem cells are those cells, which are liable for developing various cell types in our body. Simply, they rally round us to grow and also act like repairing system. The imperative characteristic of these cells were:
1. Stem cells in person’s body can manipulate themselves even after the becoming dormant
2. They can be converted into cells with specific function (the function we want! Like organ specific, etc)
But recently a study done by researches at Stanford-Burnham Medical Institute says that, Stem cells are mortal! This is the reason why Bone Marrow Transplant may not be successful. Because, the transplanted stem cells dont live long enough or they proliferate too well leading to Leukemia.
"Each stem cell is pre-programmed to self-renew only for a set amount of time that, in mice, ranges from a few months to several years, stem cell self-renewal is strictly regulated to successfully negotiate a precarious balance: too much self-renewal results in leukemia, while too little leads to bone marrow failure"
So they have created a computer program that predicts the life span of stem cells. this computer simulation program will allow them to understand better about stem cell proliferation, which once done will help them treat diseases like Alzheimer's, Diabetes, etc.
